When a washing machine won't turn on or won't start a cycle, it's easy to assume the worst. But several of the causes are simple and cost nothing to fix. Work through these six checks before calling anyone.
1. Power Supply
Check the obvious first: is the plug firmly in the socket, is the socket switched on, and has the fuse or MCB tripped? Try another appliance in the same socket to confirm it has power.
2. Voltage and Stabiliser
Chennai's voltage fluctuations can trip a stabiliser or cause the machine's protection circuit to cut power. If you use a stabiliser, check its indicator light and reset it. Low voltage during peak hours can stop a machine from starting.
3. Door or Lid Not Fully Closed
Fully automatic machines won't start unless the door lock (front-load) or lid switch (top-load) confirms the door is shut. Press the door firmly until it clicks. A worn lock is a common reason a machine appears "dead" at the start of a cycle.
4. Water Supply
Many machines power on but won't start if they can't fill with water. Check that the inlet tap is open, the inlet hose isn't kinked, and the mesh filter where the hose meets the machine isn't clogged — a frequent issue with Chennai's hard water.
5. Control Panel Lock or Wrong Setting
A child-lock feature may be active, or the machine may be paused or set to a delayed-start timer. Check the display for a lock symbol or timer, and hold the relevant button to release it.
6. Faulty Start Switch, PCB, or Motor
If everything above checks out and the machine is still unresponsive, the fault is likely internal — the start switch, the main control board, or the motor. These need a technician's diagnosis.
