A washing machine that leaks water is both a practical nuisance and a potential safety hazard — water on a bathroom floor near electrical appliances is dangerous. Most washing machine leaks have a clear cause that a trained technician can identify and fix in a single visit.
1. Damaged Door Seal (Front-Load Machines)
The rubber door gasket on front-load machines creates a watertight seal when the door is closed. Over time — typically 4–6 years — the rubber deteriorates, develops small cracks, or collects debris in its folds that prevent it from sealing properly.
Signs: Water leaks from the front of the machine, near the door, especially during the wash or rinse cycle.
Check yourself: Open the door and inspect the rubber seal carefully. Run your finger around the inside folds — debris, mould, or small tears will be visible.
Fix: Clean the gasket folds with a damp cloth regularly. If the rubber is cracked or torn, the gasket needs replacement. This is a moderately involved repair — the door and front panel are partially disassembled, the old gasket removed, and a new one fitted.
2. Loose or Damaged Inlet Hose
The inlet hose connects your water tap to the washing machine and carries water under pressure. If the connection is loose, the hose fitting is cracked, or the rubber washer inside the fitting has worn out, water leaks from the back of the machine near the tap connection.
Signs: Water appears behind or at the sides of the machine — not from beneath it. The leak is usually constant, even when the machine is idle (because the tap is open).
Fix: Tighten the connection. If the rubber washer inside the fitting is flat or cracked, replace it (costs ₹20–50 at any hardware store). If the hose itself is cracked, replace the entire hose — they're inexpensive.
3. Blocked or Damaged Drain Hose
The drain hose carries used water from the machine to the drain pipe. If it's kinked, blocked, or not properly seated in the drain pipe, water can overflow or leak during the drain cycle.
Signs: Water appears on the floor during the drain or spin cycle. There may also be an error code indicating a drain fault.
Fix: Check the drain hose at the back of the machine for kinks. Ensure it's inserted at least 15 cm into the standpipe but no more than 25 cm (too deep creates a siphon effect). If the hose is cracked, replace it.
4. Clogged Pump Filter (Front-Load Machines)
Front-load machines have a small filter near the bottom front of the machine (behind a small access panel). This filter catches lint, coins, and small items before they reach the pump. When it's clogged and the machine tries to drain, water can back up and leak from the filter cap.
Signs: Water leaks from the bottom front of the machine. You may also notice the machine struggling to drain or taking longer than usual.
Fix: Place a shallow tray under the access panel. Slowly unscrew the filter cap — water will flow out. Remove any debris, clean the filter, and screw it back tightly. Clean this filter every 3 months.
5. Faulty Water Inlet Valve
The inlet valve is an electrically controlled valve that opens to let water in and closes when the tub is full. If it fails in the open position or develops a crack, it allows water to continuously flow in — eventually overflowing the tub.
Signs: The machine overfills with water even when not running. Water leaks from inside the machine, often from underneath.
Fix: The inlet valve is replaced. This is a straightforward repair — the valve is accessible once the back panel is removed.
Safety: What to Do When You Discover a Leak
- Switch off the machine immediately
- Turn off the water tap connected to the machine
- Unplug the machine from the socket
- Mop up standing water before it reaches the socket area
- Call a technician — do not run the machine again until repaired
