Finding your washing machine full of dirty water at the end of a cycle is frustrating. In most cases the cause is a simple blockage you can clear yourself. Here are the six most common reasons a washing machine won't drain — in order of how often we see them.
1. Blocked Drain Pump Filter
Coins, buttons, hair clips, and lint collect in the drain pump filter and block the water from draining. This is the number-one cause on front-load machines.
Fix: Look for a small hatch at the bottom front of the machine. Place a towel and shallow tray underneath, unscrew the filter slowly, and clear any debris. Rinse it and screw it back firmly.
2. Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose
The drain hose at the back can kink, sag, or clog with detergent sludge and lint.
Fix: Pull the machine out, straighten the hose, and check it isn't pushed too far into the drain pipe. Detach and flush it with water to clear any buildup.
3. Blocked Drain Pipe or Standpipe
Sometimes the machine is fine — it's the household drain pipe that's blocked, so the water has nowhere to go.
Fix: Test by lowering the hose into a bucket. If it drains into the bucket, your household drain is the problem, not the machine.
4. Faulty Drain Pump
If the pump motor has failed or an object is jammed in the impeller, the machine can't push water out. You may hear a humming or buzzing but no draining.
Fix: The pump needs to be inspected and usually replaced by a technician.
5. Broken Lid Switch or Door Lock
Many machines won't drain or spin if they think the door is open. A worn lid switch (top-load) or door lock (front-load) stops the cycle.
Fix: This is an electrical part replacement best done by a technician.
6. Control Board / Timer Fault
On fully automatic machines, a faulty PCB or timer can skip the drain step entirely.
Fix: Requires diagnosis and board-level repair or replacement.
What You Can Try First
Clean the pump filter and check the hose — these two fix the majority of drainage problems and cost nothing. If water still won't drain, stop using the machine to avoid overflow and call a technician.
