Washing Machine Making Loud Noise When Spinning? Here's Why

A washing machine that roars, bangs, or grinds during the spin cycle is trying to tell you something. Here's what each noise usually means and what to do about it.

A little sound during spinning is normal. A loud bang, grind, or violent shaking is not — and ignoring it can turn a cheap fix into an expensive one. Here's how to read the noise your washing machine is making.

Loud Banging or Thumping

This usually means the load is unbalanced — clothes have bunched to one side. Heavy items like blankets and jeans are common culprits.

Fix: Pause the machine, redistribute the clothes evenly, and restart. If it happens even with balanced loads, the shock absorbers or suspension springs may be worn — a technician job.

Grinding or Rumbling Noise

A deep grinding or aeroplane-like rumble that gets louder over weeks almost always points to worn drum bearings. This is the most common serious noise fault on front-load machines.

Fix: Bearings must be replaced by a technician. Don't delay — running a machine with failed bearings can damage the drum and shaft, making the repair far more expensive.

Squealing or Screeching

A high-pitched squeal often means a worn or slipping drive belt, or a foreign object caught between the drum and tub.

Fix: The belt is an inexpensive replacement. A trapped object (a coin or wire) needs to be removed before it scratches the drum.

Rattling or Clanking

Usually something loose — a coin in the pump, a hairpin between the drum walls, or loose transit bolts that were never removed after delivery.

Fix: Check pockets before washing, clean the pump filter, and confirm the shipping bolts at the back were removed during installation.

Violent Shaking or "Walking"

If the machine moves across the floor while spinning, it's either not level or standing on a slippery surface.

Fix: Adjust the levelling feet until the machine is stable and doesn't rock. Place it on a firm, level floor.

When to Call a Technician

Balance and levelling you can fix yourself. But grinding (bearings), squealing (belt), or any burning smell means you should stop using the machine and get it inspected before further damage occurs.
