Freezer Not Freezing but Fridge Working? Causes and Fixes

When one compartment cools and the other doesn't, the fault is usually airflow or the defrost system — not the compressor. Here's how to diagnose it before you call anyone.

A refrigerator where the fridge section is cold but the freezer isn't freezing — or vice versa — points to a specific set of faults. The compressor is clearly running (one side is cold), so the problem is usually how cold air moves between the two compartments. Here are the likely causes.

1. Blocked Airflow Vents

In most frost-free fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge section through vents. If those vents are blocked by food packets or ice, air can't circulate properly.

Fix: Clear space around the internal vents and don't overpack either compartment. Keep at least a small gap for air to move.

2. Frost Buildup on the Evaporator (Defrost Fault)

Frost-free fridges have a defrost heater that melts frost off the cooling coils periodically. If the defrost timer, heater, or sensor fails, frost builds into a solid block over the coils, choking airflow. The freezer may stay cold while the fridge warms up.

Fix: A telltale sign is heavy ice at the back of the freezer. This needs a technician to replace the failed defrost component.

3. Faulty Evaporator Fan

The fan that pushes cold air around often fails or gets jammed by ice. Without it, cold air stays in the freezer and never reaches the fridge.

Signs: The freezer is cold, the fridge is warm, and you don't hear the usual fan whir.

Fix: Fan motor replacement — a technician job.

4. Thermostat or Temperature Control Fault

A faulty thermostat can call for cooling in one zone but not the other, especially on fridges with separate controls.

Fix: Check both dials are set correctly first. If they are and the problem persists, the thermostat needs replacing.

5. Damper Control Problem

Many fridges use a small flap (damper) to control how much cold air enters the fridge section. If it's stuck, one compartment gets too little air.

Fix: Diagnosis and repair by a technician.

What to Try First

Rearrange food to clear the vents, confirm both temperature dials are set correctly, and check for a block of ice at the back of the freezer. If you find heavy frost or a silent fan, it's time for a technician — continuing to run it wastes power and food.
