Refrigerator Not Cooling? 6 Causes and When to Call a Technician

A refrigerator that stops cooling is an urgent problem — food spoils in hours in Chennai's heat. Here are the 6 most common causes and what a technician will do.

A refrigerator that stops cooling is a genuine emergency in Chennai's climate. Food spoils within hours. Understanding the likely cause helps you act quickly and avoid unnecessary panic or expense.

1. Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils (usually at the back or underneath the fridge) release heat from the refrigerator into the room. When they're coated with dust and dirt — very common in Chennai homes — they can't dissipate heat efficiently, and the refrigerator struggles to maintain temperature.

Fix: Unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall, and vacuum the coils. Use a soft brush for caked-on dust. This takes 15 minutes and can dramatically improve cooling. Do this every 6 months.

2. Faulty Door Seal (Gasket)

The rubber seal around the fridge door keeps cold air in. If it's torn, cracked, or has lost its magnetic grip, warm air leaks in constantly and the compressor runs non-stop trying to maintain temperature.

The paper test: Close the door on a sheet of paper. If you can pull the paper out easily, the seal is weak and needs replacement.

Fix: Gasket replacement is simple and affordable. A new seal makes an immediate difference in cooling and electricity consumption.

3. Thermostat Set Too Warm

Check the temperature dial inside the fridge. If it's been accidentally moved to a lower cooling setting (or "0" on older dials), the compressor may not run enough to maintain a cold temperature.

Fix: Set the fridge to 3–4°C and the freezer to -18°C. Wait 4–6 hours to see if cooling improves before assuming a technical fault.

4. Condenser Fan Motor Failure

The condenser fan (located near the compressor at the back of the fridge) draws air across the condenser coils to cool them. If this fan fails, heat builds up and cooling drops quickly.

Signs: The compressor feels very hot to the touch. The fridge is warmer than usual despite running constantly.

Fix: The fan motor is replaced. This is a moderate-cost repair and straightforward for an experienced technician.

5. Low Refrigerant / Gas Leak

Like an AC, a refrigerator uses refrigerant to transfer heat. If there's a leak, the cooling capacity drops gradually — the freezer may still feel cold but the fridge section warms up. Over time, even the freezer fails.

Signs: Frost builds up unevenly in the freezer. Food in the fridge section spoils quickly even though the freezer still works.

Fix: A technician locates the leak, seals it, and recharges the refrigerant. This should restore full cooling if the compressor is still healthy.

6. Compressor Failure

The compressor is the most critical component — it circulates the refrigerant through the system. When it fails, the fridge stops cooling completely. You'll notice the usual compressor hum is absent.

Signs: Absolutely no cooling in both fridge and freezer sections. The fridge is completely silent — no compressor sound at all.

Fix: Compressor replacement is the most expensive fridge repair. Before deciding, check the age and make of the fridge. For fridges over 8–10 years old, it may be more economical to replace. A technician can advise after diagnosis.

Quick Checklist Before Calling a Technician

  • Is the fridge plugged in and the socket working? (Test with another device)
  • Has there been a power cut recently? (Allow 4–6 hours to restabilise)
  • Is the thermostat set correctly?
  • Are the condenser coils dusty? (Clean them — it's free)
  • Does the door seal pass the paper test?

If none of these fix it, the problem is mechanical and needs a technician.

Repair vs Replace?

As a rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than 50% of the price of a new fridge of the same capacity, consider replacing. If the fridge is under 7 years old, repair is almost always the right choice.
