How to Clean a Washing Machine and Remove Bad Smell

If your freshly washed clothes come out smelling musty, the machine itself is the problem. Here's how to deep-clean a washing machine and keep bad smells away in Chennai's humid climate.

A washing machine that smells — or leaves clothes smelling damp and musty — is extremely common in Chennai, where high humidity encourages mould and bacteria to grow inside the drum, gasket, and detergent drawer. The good news: you can fix it in under an hour with things you already have at home.

Why Washing Machines Start to Smell

Odour comes from a buildup of detergent residue, fabric softener, body oils, and lint that feeds mould and bacteria. Front-load machines are especially prone because the rubber door gasket traps water. Washing only in cold water and using too much detergent make it worse.

Step-by-Step Deep Clean

  1. Clean the door gasket (front-load): Pull back the rubber seal and wipe out the trapped water, hair, and gunk with a cloth dipped in a vinegar-water mix.
  2. Clean the detergent drawer: Remove it fully, scrub off the slimy residue under warm water, and clear the drawer cavity.
  3. Clean the pump filter (front-load): Open the bottom hatch and clear the drain filter of lint and debris.
  4. Run a hot maintenance wash: Add two cups of white vinegar (or a washing-machine cleaner) to an empty drum and run the hottest, longest cycle.
  5. Second rinse with baking soda: Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda in the drum and run a short hot cycle to neutralise remaining odour.
  6. Wipe and dry: Dry the drum, gasket, and drawer, and leave the door open.

How to Keep It Smelling Fresh

  • Leave the door and detergent drawer open between washes so the inside dries — the single most effective habit in Chennai
  • Use the correct amount of detergent — more is not better, and excess residue feeds mould
  • Run a hot maintenance wash once a month
  • Remove wet clothes promptly instead of leaving them in the drum
  • Wipe the gasket dry after front-load washes

When It's Not Just Dirt

If a strong smell persists after a thorough clean, there may be trapped water in the drain hose, a clogged filter deep in the pump, or standing water in the sump — issues that need a technician to dismantle and clean.
