Finding water inside your double-door fridge — often pooling under the vegetable drawers — or leaking onto the floor is a common complaint, especially in humid Chennai. In most cases it's a simple blockage, not a serious fault. Here are the five usual causes.
1. Blocked Defrost Drain (Most Common)
Frost-free fridges melt frost during defrost cycles, and that water drains through a small hole at the back of the freezer or fridge compartment down to a tray near the compressor. In Chennai's humidity, this drain often clogs with ice or food debris, so the water backs up and leaks inside.
Fix: Locate the small drain hole at the back-bottom of the interior. Gently clear it with warm water or a soft pipe cleaner. This resolves the majority of internal leaks.
2. Damaged or Loose Door Gasket
If the rubber door seal is worn, torn, or dirty, warm humid air leaks in and condenses into water inside the fridge. It also makes the compressor work harder.
Fix: Clean the gasket and check it seals evenly all around (a sheet of paper shut in the door should be hard to pull out). Replace it if it's cracked or loose.
3. Fridge Not Level
If the fridge tilts forward, defrost water can flow the wrong way instead of into the drain.
Fix: Adjust the front feet so the fridge tilts very slightly backward, helping water drain correctly.
4. Overfilled or Blocked Drain Pan
The tray under the fridge that collects defrost water can crack or overflow, dripping onto the floor.
Fix: Pull the fridge out, locate the pan near the compressor, and empty or reseat it. Replace it if cracked.
5. Clogged or Frozen Water Line (Water/Ice Dispenser Models)
If your fridge has a water or ice dispenser, a cracked or loose supply line can leak.
Fix: Inspect the water line connections at the back; a technician can reseal or replace a damaged line.
What to Do First
Start by clearing the defrost drain and checking the door seal — together these fix most internal leaks and cost nothing. If water keeps returning, the drain may be blocked deeper in the system and needs a technician.
RK Aircon clears defrost drains and repairs leaking fridges of all brands across Chennai, usually in a single visit.
