AC Wet Service vs Dry Service: Which Does Your AC Need?

When you book an AC service in Chennai you'll often be asked: wet or dry? The two are very different in depth and price. Here's what each includes and how to pick the right one.

Book an AC service in Chennai and you'll likely be asked whether you want a "wet service" or a "dry service". They're not the same thing — one is a light clean, the other a deep clean — and the difference matters for how well your AC cools and how much you pay. Here's a clear breakdown.

What Is a Dry Service?

A dry service is a basic maintenance visit done without water jets. The technician:

  • Cleans or rinses the removable air filters
  • Wipes down the indoor unit exterior and vents
  • Checks the cooling, gas pressure, and electrical connections
  • Clears the outdoor unit of visible dust and debris

It's quicker (20–30 minutes) and cheaper. A dry service is fine for routine upkeep between deep cleans, or for a relatively new AC that isn't heavily soiled.

What Is a Wet Service?

A wet service (also called "jet service" or "deep cleaning") is a thorough clean using pressurised water. The technician typically:

  • Covers the indoor unit's electricals with a service bag/jacket
  • Sprays the evaporator coils and blower with a water jet and coil cleaner to remove caked dust, mould, and grime
  • Flushes the condensate drain thoroughly
  • Pressure-washes the outdoor condenser coils
  • Reassembles, dries, and runs a full cooling test

It takes longer (45–75 minutes) and costs more, but it restores cooling performance and airflow far better than a dry service.

Which One Does Your AC Need?

Choose a wet service if:

  • It's been 6+ months since the last deep clean
  • Cooling has dropped or airflow feels weak
  • The AC smells musty (a sign of mould on the coils)
  • You live near the coast, a main road, or construction (heavy dust and salt)

A dry service is enough if:

  • You had a wet service recently and just want interim upkeep
  • The AC is new and lightly used

A Sensible Schedule for Chennai

Because of Chennai's dust and long running hours, most homes do well with two wet services a year (ideally one before summer and one after monsoon), plus a dry service in between. That keeps coils clean, cooling strong, and electricity use down.

Watch Out For

A wet service must be done carefully — the indoor unit's electricals need to be properly covered before water is used, and the unit must be dried before restarting. Poorly done jet cleaning can short components or bend the delicate coil fins. Always use an experienced technician for wet servicing.
