By April and May, Chennai routinely crosses 38–42°C, and air conditioners run for 12+ hours a day. This is precisely when neglected ACs fail — usually on the hottest afternoon, when technicians are busiest. A little preparation before peak summer keeps your AC reliable and efficient. Here's your checklist.
1. Get a Pre-Summer Service
The single most valuable step. A service before summer clears the dust that builds up in Chennai's air, restores airflow, and catches weak parts (like a tired capacitor) before they fail under load. A serviced AC also cools faster and uses less power.
2. Clean the Filters — and Keep Cleaning Them
Chennai's dust clogs filters fast. Clean them every 2–3 weeks in summer. A clogged filter is the most common reason an AC "suddenly" stops cooling well in peak heat.
3. Clear the Outdoor Unit
The outdoor unit dumps your room's heat outside — it can't do that if it's choked with dust or crammed against a wall. Clear at least 60 cm of space around it and gently clean off surface dust. In extreme heat, shading the outdoor unit from direct sun (without blocking airflow) improves efficiency.
4. Check the Gas Level Early
If your AC cooled weakly at the end of last summer, get the refrigerant checked before peak heat. A slightly low charge that was tolerable in March becomes a serious cooling failure in May.
5. Set the Right Temperature
Setting the AC to 18°C doesn't cool the room faster — it just runs the compressor harder and spikes your bill. Set it to 24–26°C; it's comfortable, cools efficiently, and reduces strain on the unit. Every degree lower adds roughly 6% to power consumption.
6. Support the AC's Work
- Close curtains during the afternoon to block heat gain
- Use ceiling fans alongside the AC to spread cool air, so you can set a higher temperature
- Seal gaps around doors and windows
- Avoid running heat-generating appliances in the same room during peak hours
7. Protect Against Voltage Swings
Chennai's summer load causes voltage fluctuations that can damage the compressor. A good stabiliser (or a model with built-in voltage protection) is worth it.
Don't Wait for the Breakdown
Booking a service in peak summer often means a wait, because everyone books at once. A March or early-April service means you sail through the hottest months without a mid-afternoon breakdown.
RK Aircon offers pre-summer AC servicing and same-day repairs across Chennai. Book early in the season to keep your home cool when it matters most.
