When your AC stops responding to the remote, it's easy to assume the AC has failed. In most cases, though, the fault is with the remote itself — and it's something you can fix in a few minutes without a technician. Work through these six checks in order.
1. Replace the Batteries (Start Here)
Weak batteries are the single most common cause. The remote's display may still light up faintly even when the batteries are too weak to send a signal to the AC across the room.
Fix: Replace both batteries with a fresh pair — don't mix old and new. Make sure the + and − terminals match the markings inside the compartment. Use good-quality AAA batteries; cheap ones drain fast in Chennai's heat.
2. Test the Infrared Signal with Your Phone Camera
The remote sends commands using an invisible infrared (IR) light. You can check if it's working with any smartphone camera.
How: Open your phone's camera app, point the front tip of the remote at the lens, and press any button. If you see a faint purple or white flash on your screen, the remote is transmitting — the problem is elsewhere. If there's no flash, the remote (or its batteries) is the issue.
Note: some newer phones filter out IR on the rear camera — try the front (selfie) camera if the rear shows nothing.
3. Check the Mode and Temperature Settings
Sometimes the remote works fine, but the settings mean the AC won't cool. A common one: the remote is set to "Fan" mode (just circulating air) instead of "Cool" mode, or the temperature is set higher than the room.
Fix: Set the mode to Cool (snowflake symbol) and the temperature to 24°C. Also check that "timer" or "sleep" mode isn't switching the unit off.
4. Clean the Remote and the AC's Sensor
Dust or a sticky residue over the remote's IR emitter or the receiver window on the indoor unit can block the signal. In Chennai's dusty environment this builds up over months.
Fix: Wipe the front tip of the remote and the display panel area of the indoor unit gently with a dry cloth.
5. Reduce the Distance and Angle
IR signals are line-of-sight and weaken with distance and bright light. If you're pointing from across a large room, or strong sunlight is falling on the indoor unit's sensor, the signal may not register.
Fix: Stand within 4–5 metres, point the remote directly at the indoor unit, and draw curtains if direct sun is hitting the unit.
6. Reset the Remote
Remotes can occasionally freeze or lose their settings after a battery change. Most have a small "Reset" pinhole button.
Fix: Remove the batteries, press and hold any button for 5 seconds to drain residual charge, then reinsert the batteries. If there's a reset pinhole, press it with a pin or toothpick.
How to Tell If It's the AC, Not the Remote
If your phone camera shows the remote is transmitting IR (step 2) but the AC still doesn't respond, the problem is likely on the AC side — most commonly a faulty IR receiver on the indoor unit's control board. Other signs the AC itself needs attention:
- The manual ON/OFF button on the indoor unit also fails to start the AC
- The unit starts but the display panel shows an error code
- The unit responds intermittently regardless of which remote you use
A Temporary Workaround
Almost every split AC has a small manual button — usually behind the front flap of the indoor unit, sometimes labelled "AUTO" or "Power". Pressing it runs the AC in automatic mode so you're not left without cooling while you sort out the remote. A universal AC remote (available for ₹150–300) is a cheap stopgap if your original remote is beyond repair.
